  4.     For any lover of a novel turned into a movie, the book is
  5. always better. Turning the pages, the reader creates an ideal
  6. film version, with the perfect stars, shots and atmosphere. So
  7. when Alan J. Pakula set out to film Presumed Innocent, he knew
  8. he had to please not only this summer's moviegoers -- the film
  9. premieres July 27 -- but also the best seller's legions of
  10. fans.

  12.     Hollywood could not have cast a more suitable director.
  13. Serious and sensitive, with a trial lawyer's appetite for the
  14. telling detail, Pakula had brought two "unfilmable" books, All
  15. the President's Men and Sophie's Choice, to life onscreen. For
  16. his new challenge, he and production designer George Jenkins
  17. scouted courthouses around the country. They finally chose
  18. Detroit for exterior shots, Newark for some early court scenes
  19. and, for the climactic trial, an elaborate set modeled on a
  20. Cleveland building and meticulously reproduced at the Kaufman
  21. Astoria Studios in Queens, N.Y.

  23.     Next Pakula had to give faces -- famous faces -- to Scott
  24. Turow's page people. Bonnie Bedelia plays Rusty Sabich's wife,
  25. Raul Julia his defense counsel, Brian Dennehy the prosecutor,
  26. Paul Winfield the judge, Greta Scacchi the luckless love. And
  27. as the accused, Pakula selected Harrison Ford, segueing
  28. handsomely from Star Wars and Indiana Jones hunkdom to
  29. acclaimed actor. The casting pleased Turow. "Ever since the
  30. book came out, people have been saying that I'm Rusty," he told
  31. Ford when they met. "I'm glad you're playing him. Now people
  32. will identify the character with you."

  34.     Ford happily accepted the challenge. With Pakula, he spent
  35. a week at the Wayne County (Detroit) prosecutor's office
  36. observing a murder case. He quizzed lawyers at lunch and took
  37. files back to his hotel at night. At one conference a question
  38. arose -- about the relative heights of shooter and victim --
  39. that stumped the real lawyers. "Harrison was the only one who
  40. knew the answer," recalls chief assistant prosecutor George
  41. Ward, "because he had studied the pictures of the two persons.
  42. He really did his homework."

  44.     Was it worth the trouble? One close reader of the book is
  45. already sold. Turow's wife Annette was on the set watching a
  46. rehearsal when she burst into tears. "I knew the dialogue by
  47. heart," she says, "but suddenly it got the better of me, to
  48. hear it spoken in such a realistic setting -- and to realize
  49. that soon millions of other people would hear it too."
